City Health Care Partnership CIC converts unwanted IT into social impact and rebates with secure IT recycling

As an employee-owned social enterprise delivering essential community health services, City Health Care Partnership CIC sought an IT recycling partner that shares its commitment to positive social impact. By partnering with Converge, CHCP benefits from secure IT asset recycling that boosts its ESG goals.

City Health Care Partnership CIC (CHCP CIC) delivers a wide range of high-quality, safe NHS health and care services across Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Knowsley, Liverpool and St Helens. The organisation provides over 50 community-based services, ranging from palliative care and psychological wellbeing to urgent care. With a workforce of more than 2,000 employees, CHCP plays a crucial role in improving community health and wellbeing.

CHCP operates as an employee-owned social enterprise, built on the principle of being a “co-owned, for better profit” organisation. Profits are reinvested directly into enhancing services, supporting colleagues, and strengthening the communities it serves. This model empowers employees by fostering a sense of ownership, belonging, and accountability.

Impact and Alignment with Social Enterprise Values

The employee ownership approach closely aligns with the principles of social enterprise, prioritising people and purpose over profit. By reinvesting surplus income into service improvement and community initiatives, CHCP sustains both its social mission and business success.

This commitment to social enterprise made Converge an ideal partner for City Health Care Partnership CIC with both organisations sharing a strong dedication to ESG and sustainability, driving meaningful positive impact.

Professional and Reliable

Thomas Moses is the ICT Logistics, Asset and Procurement Lead for CHCP and IT asset disposal falls under his remit. “We’ve been working with Converge for several years,” he said. “We were keen to work with a company that had the expertise, facilities and resources to offer a streamlined and reliable ITAD and recycling service.”

Prior to working with Converge, CHCP dealt with a provider that wiped IT on their premises which Thomas noted was very time consuming.  “It became quite frustrating as our staff were required to essentially supervise their time while we waited for the kit to be wiped. It was not an effective use of our engineer’s time.”

CHCP was also very keen to ensure that the company responsible for their asset disposal could offer the highest security guarantees and assurance.  Converge offers collection in secure GPS-tracked vehicles and uses Blancco to securely erase data to MoD-standard.

Thomas said: “Security is a massive factor on all minds due to the increased number of cyber-attacks.  It’s great to know that our old kit goes to a dedicated facility watched by CCTV, GPS tracked vehicles and vetted staff. It gives us peace of mind.”

In addition to the high level of security Converge also provide complete traceability of kit including a full recycling audit.  “The reporting data is very useful,” adds Thomas. “We do of course, do our own internal checks to make sure devices have been removed from our system, however the Converge audit provides an additional level of paper trail to support our own.”

Converge has developed an award-winning 360-recycling app that enables organisations to book and manage collections of their broken, old, or redundant IT at their convenience. Thomas uses both the app and email contact for collecting waste.  He finds the app useful for smaller collections but for anything more complex, he will liaise with Converge via email.  He likes the option of having both.

The complex jobs tend to be where networking equipment is involved although for the most part Converge collect laptops, desktops, monitors, printers and other ancillary equipment. Thomas said: “Collections are straight forward. There have never been any issues, and my account manager always makes sure we are booked in for collections during busy periods so that we are never left with lots of kit on site.”

Aligned social values

Due to its commitment to a social mission, CHCP has its own charity, the CHCP Foundation. It awards small grants to voluntary and community groups who are working to improve health and wellbeing in local areas, and also sponsors CHCP colleagues who are raising funds for charities that mean a lot to them.

A benefit of working with Converge is its commitment to zero avoidable landfill and recycling old kit that can be used elsewhere. CHCP has sent around 2,500 pieces of kit to Converge and 1,900 of these have been recycled for reuse. This sees customers benefiting from a financial rebate, and in this case, over £7,000 in cash has been repaid to CHCP.

“It’s amazing how Converge not only offer such a streamlined free service to us but also give us money back,” said Thomas. “This money is immediately fed into our charitable Foundation who will use it to fund their local initiatives.

“In addition, the effort that Converge provide when it comes to their green reporting is so important.  Their reporting on carbon counts and trees planted feeds into our green agenda and reporting.”

Thomas is happy to recommend Converge to other NHS organisations. “Providing you have a minimum of 25 pieces of kit, collections are free. You can rely on Converge for the secure erasure of data, a relevant audit trail and a commitment to sustainability. And if like us, you have a lot of kit to dispose of, you may even get money back! What’s not to like?”
